The Tottenham defender found the net on two occasions as Spurs extended their winning streak on the road in the Premier League and delivered Everton their initial loss at their new home.

The Toffees were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their new ground at the dockside location, having left Goodison Park behind after 133 years at the end of the previous campaign.

But Spurs captain Van de Ven pounced twice from corners in the first half to put their impressive record at jeopardy, and they were failed to turn it around before the midfielder - set up by ex-Everton forward the Brazilian - nodded in a final goal to put the game to bed.

Jake O'Brien believed he had levelled the tally a short while after Van de Ven's opener, glancing a powerful header past Guglielmo Vicario from an set-piece.

Beto, meanwhile, missed a handful of chances, while the Italian goalkeeper made a series of fine stops to ensure Tottenham went five matches on the road unbeaten in the English top flight.

But the VAR stepped in, advising the match official to review the score on the screen and the referee ruled that the winger and the attacker were in offside positions and had interfered with the Spurs keeper.

The win moves the manager's side into third place in the Premier League, five points off north London rivals and table-toppers the Gunners.

Everton stay in 14th position and sit six points clear of the relegation zone.

Tottenham analysis: Van de Ven excels in role at each end of pitch

After a drab weekday performance in the Champions League against the French side, where they managed a mere attempts on goal, the manager opted for the French striker up front instead of ex-Everton forward the Brazilian.

The summer signing was unable to influence the game before being replaced for Richarlison after 60 minutes on the pitch, but it emerged he proved unnecessary in the final outcome.

Centre-back Van de Ven transformed into an attacking force to be feared.

Spurs' opening strike came from a cleverly executed corner routine, with Rodrigo Bentancur heading the ball back across the six-yard box for an free Van de Ven to score.

And Ven de Ven - filling in as captain in Cristian Romero's absence - added his second in first-half stoppage time as he outjumped the England keeper to nod in.

The Dutchman was just as impressive in defence, partnering well with Kevin Danso as the pair dealt excellently with the 34 crosses sent their way by the opposition.

Toffees breakdown: Everton missing finishing touch

Everton's recent stadium had been a happy hunting ground, but it seems the freshness may have worn off slightly and supporters flocked to the gates after Sarr's third for Spurs.

The end in the team's unbeaten home run won't be a major concern for the manager, but their attacking woes are.

The forward and Thierno Barry - the Everton's two recognised strikers - had scored only a single goal between them before Sunday's outing.

And they were failed to add to that poor record on a wet and gloomy night on Merseyside.

The striker's performance was summed up when he chose to overhead kick a golden opportunity from close range, despite having space and opportunity to readjust for a more conventional attempt that would have challenged the keeper.

The substitute, too, failed to influence the game after replacing the starter in the second half.

It wasn't for a shortage of chance. Most of Everton's offensive moves came through Grealish and the forward, who tirelessly whipped dangerous balls into the Tottenham penalty area.

The Toffees: The team head to the Stadium of Light in the top flight on early November at 8 PM.

Tottenham: Spurs go to St James' Park on Wednesday, 29 October for their next round Carabao Cup match against Newcastle.
